Southern Cross University
Southern Cross University (SCU) stands as a distinct, modern Australian public university, officially established on January 1, 1994, with an identity—the Southern Cross constellation—that symbolizes a guiding light for independent thinking, and a firm focus on the future. Evolving from the Lismore Teachers’ College established in 1970, SCU quickly carved out a reputation for innovation and a strong connection to its regions. The University’s core campus locations are nestled in the stunning natural environments of the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, encompassing Lismore, Coffs Harbour, and the Gold Coast in Queensland, the latter being uniquely situated adjacent to the Gold Coast Airport in Coolangatta. In addition to these main hubs, SCU extends its reach through branch campuses in major metropolitan centers like Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, alongside specialized offerings such as The Hotel School, which operates in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. This multi-campus structure, which also includes the National Marine Science Centre (NMSC) at Coffs Harbour, supports a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs across its four academic faculties—Business, Law and Arts; Education; Health; and Science and Engineering—as well as the Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples and SCU College.
Driven by a clear purpose to transform lives through impactful learning and world-leading research, Southern Cross University has pioneered a game-changing Southern Cross Model. This innovative educational approach restructures learning into shorter, immersive six-week units, replacing the traditional semester-long study structure. The aim of this model is to promote deeper learning, increase student success rates, and give students a greater sense of momentum by achieving milestones more quickly. Beyond its teaching excellence, which has earned it high rankings for student support and overall student experience, SCU is a recognized research institution. Its ground-breaking research activity has achieved global recognition, particularly in fields like Oceanography (ranked Top 100 globally), coral reproduction, biogeochemistry, and sustainable agriculture, with research being rated at world standard or above in 23 key areas. The University’s strong ties to its local communities, which include practical facilities like the SCU Health Clinic and its commitment to solving real-world problems, highlight its dedication to creating a positive cycle of learning and innovation. With a vast alumni network exceeding 80,000 graduates worldwide, Southern Cross University, guided by its motto “Forever learning” (Doctrine Perpetua), continues to be an influential force, dedicated to creating a better tomorrow through collaborative and transformative education and research.
