To be eligible for an Australian student visa (subclass 500), you must meet the following requirements: Acceptance into a registered course: You must have an offer of admission from an Australian educational Institution, Proof of financial capacity demonstrate that you have enough funds to cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs for the duration of your stay in Australia. English language proficiency: Depending on the course you intend to study, you may need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency through accepted tests like IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE. Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement: You must prove that you are genuinely intending to stay in Australia temporarily for the purpose of studying. Health and character requirements: You must meet health and character requirements, which may include undergoing medical checks and providing police certificates.

The length of stay on a student visa (subclass 500) depends on the duration of your course. Generally, you can stay in Australia for the length of your course plus an additional period (usually a few months) to allow time for completing your studies and preparing to leave. For example: For a short course (less than 10 weeks), your visa may be granted for the duration of the course plus an additional month. For degree-level programs, such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree, the visa duration will typically align with the length of your program, with an extra few months for completion or to travel after finishing your studies. If you want to extend your stay or pursue further studies, you will need to apply for a new student visa before your current visa expires.

You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the semester. Work unlimited hours during semester breaks (holidays), provided that you remain enrolled in a registered course. However, it’s important to remember that your primary purpose in Australia must be to study, and any work should not interfere with your academic performance. If you are enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program, there are no limits on the number of hours you can work. Always ensure you comply with the conditions of your visa to avoid potential penalties.
